School Opening 2020

As sent to all families....

Hopefully you have enjoyed the summer break and are now (along with your son and/or daughter) looking forward to return to school.   We at McRoberts Secondary would like to take this opportunity to welcome you, or welcome you back, to another exciting year ahead.

While we are looking forward to returning to school on Thursday, September 10,  we also know that students and parents have many questions and concerns about this extraordinary school year during pandemic conditions.  Please know that we are following all of the expectations of the Provincial Health Officer and the Ministry of Education, and are working very hard to ensure that our students and staff will be as safe as possible.

Sorry, this is a long email with a lot of information.  Hopefully it will serve as a useful guide in the start-up to this school year.  Please know that things may change, and we will do our best to ensure we communicate updates as they arise.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

McRoberts Secondary places the highest priority on the health and safety of our students, their families and our staff.  All school decisions and protocols will be made with the intent of doing everything possible to adhere to the health and safety guidelines developed by the Provincial Health Officer.  All staff and students will receive a health and safety orientation to ensure they understand and are able to practice the guidelines required to keep the school a healthy and safe place to be.  More information specific to health and safety will be emailed to parents next week and will include information around protocols put in place, the daily health check required prior to coming to school and general Q & A.

QUARTER SYSTEM

As with schools all over Richmond and the Lower Mainland, McRoberts students will be scheduled into a Quarter system, meaning they will take 2 classes at any one time, in four 10-week terms. As in a regular school year, students can complete 8 classes from September to June. The quarter system has some strengths in that it allows schools to organize students into cohorts thereby reducing the number of contacts students will have at any one time, and students will have only two classes to focus on at a time. Challenges include longer class periods and shorter, 10-week terms. Grades 8 and 9 students will attend McRoberts full time, and Grades 10-12 students will attend classes in the morning or afternoon only.

The information below includes the details of our Quarter schedule for the year, as well as an overview of the first week of school. We appreciate that students and parents have many questions, and our district has compiled FAQs that can be accessed online here.  As always at McRoberts, we will face this year as calmly as we can, by supporting and caring for one another.

STUDENT SCHEDULES

Students will receive their schedules during the orientation days on September 10 or 11th. The school timetable was built based on students' choices made last Spring, and changes were required to fit within the new structure.    We will manage these with the least disruption to students and staff so that we can get settled quickly.  Student requests for course changes will only be considered for strong educational reasons.  It will, however, be extremely difficult to make any changes due to the nature of the cohort structure.

CALENDAR AND WEBSITE ARE IN PROGRESS

As there have been many things that have changed on our calendar as well as our website, we thank you in advance for your patience as both are in the process of being updated.

Once the calendar is updated, we will update the website calendar and send out a PDF printable version for parents. Please note that changes may continue to occur throughout the year depending on provincial health guidelines, so we will also issue an updated monthly calendar at the beginning of each month.

SCHOOL FORMS

Students will receive two forms on during the Orientation.  Please complete these forms and return to the school as soon as possible.

(1)  Personal Information Release Form

Please note, these forms are needed to include students' names or photos in the yearbook, newsletters, or the school website.

(2)  Blue Medical Information

In case of an emergency we need to know who to call.  Any changes during the year should be given to the office staff.  Please make sure that any serious allergies are indicated on the form or you may call the office staff to provide any imperative information regarding your child’s health/safety.

SCHOOL COMMUNICATION

Most communication from the school will be emailed.  To receive information in a timely manner, it is extremely important that a parent email address be provided to the school.  You may do so by completing a webform on our website and ensuring that an email address has been put on your son/daughter’s Blue Medical Sheet and the sheet is returned to the school.

STUDENT AGENDA BOOKS

All students will receive a McRoberts agenda book during homeroom the first day of school.  This is a great source of information about our school expectations and policies.  It's also a great place to record homework, marks, and upcoming due dates.  We strongly recommend both students and parents read through the information at the front of the book to begin a successful year.

LOCKS AND LOCKERS

Moving to a Quarter Model and with advice from the District, students will NOT be issued lockers this year.  If this will pose a problem, please feel free to contact the school.

GENERAL FEES

In an effort to keep safe by reducing personal contact, we would like to remind families that this is the preferred method of payment.  You may pay by Visa, MasterCard, eCheck (bank transfer) or you can set up myWallet to facilitate future payments through SchoolCashOnline only.  More information will be provided at a later date.

Traditionally, Secondary schools have standardized the costs of general school fees (i.e. student council/activity fees, student agenda books, communication fee) at a total of $28.00 per student.  Students are not charged basic course fees; however, there are still charges for some optional activities and enrichment projects.  There may also be charges for athletic teams, clubs or graduation events. Enrichment fees may apply in a course in which a student wishes to undertake an optional project that is beyond the core requirements of the course and which s/he will keep.  Examples at McRoberts include costs for more elaborate projects and materials in courses such as Woodworking, Textiles and Fine Arts.  In addition, students may be charged a fee to participate in an optional field trip.  Students who are unable to pay such a fee due to financial hardship should speak to a counsellor or one of the administrators.  An individualized fee statement will come home with each student later in September.  Thank you.

PARENTS OF GRADE 8 STUDENTS

One of our traditions at McRoberts Secondary is a Mentorship Program where some of our senior students mentor our incoming grade 8s.  Our Mentors' first task is to reach out to our grade 8s via phone in the days before school starts to welcome them personally, answer any questions and allay any fears our grade 8s might have.  We are currently matching up our Mentors with our incoming grade 8s in preparation for these phone calls.  Please note that we are very clear with our senior students that grade 8 student information that is released to them is strictly confidential.   If you do not want us to release your son/daughter's cell or home number to our Mentors, and do not wish to receive a welcome phone call, please advise Ms. Vaughan by email (avaughan@sd38.bc.ca) prior to Thursday, Sept 3rd at noon.  Otherwise, students should receive their phone call or message over the long weekend, by 8pm on Monday, Sept 7th at the latest.  We look forward to helping to support these connections throughout the year!

SCHOOL PHOTOS

Photo day is on Thursday, September 17th.  All students will have their photos taken for their Go-Card and Yearbook.  Should you wish to order photos, the order form will be available online.  Photo Retake Day is Wednesday, October 14th.

Sorry for the long message.

Looking forward to seeing students on Thursday, September 10.
