Strikers Weekly - Week of June 6, 2021

From Mme. Hudson:

This week the McRoberts community came together in solidarity with the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation and with all Indigenous communities to mourn and honor the 215 children found in unmarked burial sites at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School.

Staff participated in daily moments of silence followed by walk-ins that enabled us to reflect and to collectively grieve this atrocious confirmation of what many First Nations families have known for a long time - that their children never came home.

Students also mobilized to organize a day of remembrance on Friday, encouraging our whole school community to wear orange. (Name of student) and (name of student) led the moment of silence for staff before our final walk-in on Friday, and school-wide moments of silence followed in the morning and afternoon.

These actions, while small in scope, are important in fostering understanding of what former TRC Chair Murray Sinclair refers to as “the magnitude of the truth of this experience” and the ongoing legacies of residential schools in our country. May we all reflect on the fact that the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 calls to action were born of the painful testimonies of survivors, and yet most have still to be implemented. May we also continue to advocate and amplify the brave voices of Indigenous peoples as we move forward in this work.

McRoberts Idol 2021

After a highly competitive online competition (with a number of very talented contestants), this year's McRoberts Idol has been named.  Congratulations to Saleena L. in grade 8, this year's McRoberts Idol.

Valedictory - June 13th, 2021 - 1pm

As our grade 12 students and parents are aware, due to pandemic protocols, Valedictory will be virtual (for the second straight year).

Recently, we have engaged a professional videographer to film our valedictory ceremony.  While the venue and process will be different, we hope that the steps taken to ensure that all the "components" of our trational ceremony have been included.  The ceremony video will be released to grads and their families on Sunday June 13th at 1pm.  This is our scheduled date for Valedictory.  Our hope is that families will gather (where possible and safe either in person and/or virtually) and watch this ceremony together beginning at 1pm.

Though we can never replicate the ceremony at the Chan Centre (our tradition host site for this event), our hope it still will be a fitting tribute for this important day in the lives of our graduates and their families.

A special thanks to the After Grad Parent Committee who spent countless hours to help to make the filming, a very special place for our graduates.

Ms. Charlton is Moving On

It is with very mixed emotions that we share the news that Ms. Paula Charlton will be leaving McRoberts at the end of this school year.  Ms. Charlton has made the decision to return to the classroom and plans to finishing up her career as a classroom teacher.  For Ms. Charlton, though leaving McRoberts has been a difficult decision, she is excited about the prospect of returning to the classroom.  For the past four years, Ms. Charlton has put her heart and soul into this school.  Ms. Charlton is an excellent educator who is passionate about students.  She will be deeply missed.  Though it is far too early to say goodbyes, we want to simply take this opportunity to let you know.

With Ms. Charlton's departure, we are excited to announce that Mr. Kevin Li will be joining us to fill out our administrative team.  Ms. Li will be joining us officially in July.

Yearbook Distribution - Have You Checked?

Just a reminder, students are encouraged to check the list (listed by Student Number) posted outside of the library to confirm whether or not they have purchased a yearbook.  Also on this list are any students who have outstanding fees that may prevent receiving the yearbook on time.  If you have any questions, please see Ms. Clark in the office.

McRoberts News Club Presents - Family Feud

Though it was played to a virtual audience rather than an in-person audience, the News Club ran their first annual Family Feud Game Show.  A great way to start the weekend, four teams competed for the right to call themselves the McRoberts Family Feud Champions!
