Clarifying Purpose

Throughout the implementation of the Career Education program LET (Life Education Time) Days at McRoberts we have requested and gained ongoing feedback from staff regarding the support of student learning. One theme that consistently arose from this staff feedback was the questioning from students about “why are we doing this (Career Education)?”. This feedback indicated a need to provide more information to students about the importance and benefits of the Career Education program. In response, we made an effort to provide a clear purpose at the beginning of every assignment, outlining the objective(s) for the students. For example, the Transferability Assignment completed by our Grade 10 students during LET Day 4 included the following overview at the beginning of the assignment:

ASSIGNMENT OVERVIEW: This activity is designed to help you assess your transferable skills (those that are strengths and those that need to be strengthened) and to think about how these skills might be applied to your future life and career and benefit you in the future.

In addition to providing clear written objectives for Career Education tasks, we also continue to encourage staff to use this same language when speaking to students about the purpose of Career Education. Our goal by year two of the Career Education program is for our students to have a better understanding and appreciation of the benefits of this curriculum. When our students have a better understanding of the “why”, then they will also have a greater appreciation and motivation for this program.
