Sharing Students Thoughts on Assessment
On January 19, 2019, after the Core Competencies EdCamp, several students willingly stayed behind to share their insight into what they believed to be important aspects of Assessment, Evaluation, and Reporting. The conversation that ensued was powerful, thought provoking, and helped us gain better insight into what was going well in this regard and what questions and/or concerns some of our students had.
We took the video we recorded of this, reduced it into a manageable size, and shared it as a part of a professional development session for our staff. Though the information helped in fostering rich conversations, the discussion that followed helped us better understand where we were as a school and how best to move forward.
Ironically, while the focus of this video and the discussion was on Assessment, Evaluation, and Reporting, some interesting information was revealed. Through our discussion, we began to realize that we may better help our development in Assessment, Evaluation, and Reporting, through our other foci established (supporting our Core Competencies development as well as our Career Development Implementation). We started to understand with too many competeing demands on our staff who were also working hard towards the implementation of new curricula due a change in our Graduation Program, we may yield better gains through the integration of our Assessment, Evaluation, and Reporting focus within our Core Competency and Career Development work.
This prompted us to begin to rethink our primary focus for this upcoming year. While Assessment, Evaluation, and Reporting, will not be dropped as an area of focus, we felt that it better fit within two other areas of our school's development.
