Action Post #3

An action that we have taken to support our school’s learning focus is:Our Literacy Leader organized a follow-up PBA Assessment for Spring 2026. Conducted in April, we had 198 students write the assessment on the topic of "How do shared experiences lead to deeper connections?". We also included several ELL students and an Identified Learner with needs in the assessment. (we will share what we found in the Evidence post but saw significant improvements in our student achievements, raising the percentage of students in the Developing/Proficient range from 59% to 70%). The actions taken to support this improvement included a concentrated effort by the Grade 8 team of teachers to emphasize word decoding strategies. These strategies were much more evident in the Spring Assessment and we noted significant growth in the Proficient category when analyzing Word Skills data.
This action supports our school’s learning focus in the following ways:The actions taken by our Grade 8 Team and our Literacy Team (both of whom meet monthly) have been extremely beneficial and designed to support teachers and students with teaching and learning strategies, largely targeted at Literacy skills.  We know these strategies are working because we have seen improvements in academic achievement in our Grade 8 population as well as in PBA scores (see attached Powerpoint). The plan moving forward is to continue with the Bitesized for Grade 8 teachers, but to also form a team of Grade 9 teachers in attempts to assist these students longitudinally. We intend to create a Grade 9 team and have monthly meetings to discuss strengths and weaknesses and share strategies for targeted instruction, including "Bitesized" handouts with teaching strategies directed specifically at Grade 9 teachers.
