Grade 8 - Student Mentor Connections
Our Student Mentors have been working tirelessly to support our new Grade 8s in their transition to McRoberts Secondary.
The process began in August when our Mentors warmly welcomed incoming Grade 8 students with a personalized email and letter. On the first day of school, the Mentors greeted them in person, assisting with homerooms and leading school tours to help them feel at home.
Next came Grade 8 Days, a two-day event designed to ease the transition and foster connections. On the first day, the Grade 8s engaged in team-building activities alongside their Mentors, learning strategies to navigate high school life and exploring what it means to be a McRoberts Striker. Day two featured an exciting field trip to Grouse Mountain, offering an opportunity to bond in a unique and memorable setting.
In October, the Grade 8s reconnected with their Mentors in small groups. Together, they participated in icebreaker activities, reflected on their experiences, and provided feedback about their transition into high school. To wrap up the session, each Grade 8 student shared a word that summarized their journey at McRoberts so far:
Most recently, in December, Mentors and Grade 8s met for another round of engaging activities and discussions. These included a focus on Core Competency goals, with Mentors offering guidance on setting and achieving personal objectives. They also explored “What would you do if” scenarios centered on social responsibility, culminating in a meaningful challenge: each Grade 8 student was encouraged to perform an act of kindness reflecting their values and share their experience with their Mentor via email.
To spread holiday cheer, Mentors personally invited the Grade 8s to our Winter Holiday Breakfast. Each Grade 8 student also received a Candygram and candy cane from their Mentor as a thoughtful gesture of encouragement.
We’re excited to continue building these connections between our Mentors and Grade 8s in the new year!
